ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ultraviolet light in reducing bacterial load of eggshells and the impact of experimental disinfection on hatching, embryo mortality, and time-borne distribution using broiler breeder hens of different ages (38, 42, and 48 weeks old). Fertile eggs were subjected to different exposure periods (5, 7, and 9 minutes) of UV light (UV-C) with a 254 nm wavelength. For controls, eggs disinfected with paraformaldehyde (5.3 g/m3) and eggs not disinfected (NC). After subjection to disinfection protocols, the eggs were placed into sterile plastic bags containing 20 mL of peptone saline solution (0.1% m:v) and massaged for 1 minute to release the bacterial load. Aliquots of this solution were incubated in specific medium for bacterial growth for 48 hours at 37ºC for subsequent CFU counts. To evaluate the effects of disinfection on production, eggs previously disinfected by UV-C (9 min) and paraformaldehyde and NC eggs were candled between incubation days 10 and 13 and at the end of the incubation period to assess embryonic mortality. Hatchability distribution was performed every 8 hours. The 9 minutes 254nm UV-C light exposure was able to disinfect viable eggs and matched the effectiveness of the paraformaldehyde technique.(AU)

ABSTRACT

To compare the effect of eucalyptus extract and formaldehyde gas on the hatchability, survival rate, and microbialload of embryos and biological biomarkers of embryos in the fertile eggs of broiler chicken, 120 fertile eggs weredivided into four groups (each group contained 30 eggs). The studied groups included the first and second groupsin which eucalyptus extract at concentrations of respectively 1.100 and 1.200 was used as a disinfectant, the thirdgroup in which formaldehyde gas was used as a disinfectant and the fourth group as a negative control in whichthe studied eggs were sprayed with distilled sterilized water without using any disinfectant. All eggs were kept ina standard incubation system and the hatching rate was determined after 21 days. The hatched embryos werecultured to identify infection with E. coli. The hatched chickens were monitored for one week, and survival rateand the amount of using grain, overweight, and food conversion ratios were studied in different groups. The resultsshowed that the disinfection of fertile egg with eucalyptus extract at the concentration of 1.200 was similar to thatof formaldehyde, while the eucalyptus extract at the concentration of 1.100 can increase the hatching rate and thegrowth indicators. Therefore, it seems that using eucalyptus extract in the appropriate conditions andconcentrations can be an appropriate alternative for formaldehyde.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In this work, the seminal parameters of P. mesopotamicus were evaluated fresh and after cryopreservation, focusing on the sperm variables that affect the rates of fertilization, hatching and post-hatching parameters such as larval survival and morphology. The semen and oocytes from the animals were collected after extrusion, and seminal quality and oocyte fertilization were analyzed. Subsequently, a portion of each semen sample was cryopreserved and, after two days, the oocytes from three new females were fertilized with cryopreserved semen from the males. The analyzes showed that progressive motility, spermatic vigor, motility duration, number of normal sperm and secondary abnormalities were higher in fresh semen than in semen after thawing (P <0.0001). Similarly, fertilization and hatching rates and the percentage of normal and abnormal larvae in fertilized oocytes were higher when fresh semen was used (P <0.0001). The cryopreservation process affected the qualitative parameters of the semen of Piaractus mesopotamicus. The primary abnormality of spermatozoa was the main variable that influenced both fertilization and hatching rates, both in fresh and thawed semen. The second most important variable that influenced, particularly, thawed semen, was the spermatic vigor.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of inoculation of isolated soy protein (P.I.S.) in embryonated eggs of semi-heavy with different ages. 320 embryonated eggs were used from semi-heavy breeders of Rhode Island Red lineage with 35 and 70 weeks of age. In the 17th day of incubation, the eggs were inoculated with 0.5 ml of solution in the allantoic cavity. The experimental method was completely randomized in factorial scheme (2 x 4), consisting of two factors: matrices ages (young and old matrices) and inoculation solutions (non-inoculated eggs; 0.5% of saline solution; 1% of P.I.S. + 0.5% of saline solution; and 2% of P.I.S. + 0.5% of saline solution, totalling eight treatments containing 40 eggs each. The inoculation of isolated soy protein showed positive effect on the chick-egg relation, albeit without improving incubation yields, organ development and chicks's performance in the pre-initial phase. The age of the breeder directly influenced the variables evaluated, with eggs from older breeder showing better weight, higher embryonic mortality in late phase, heavier chicks and worse feed conversion.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing incubation temperature of Araucana hen eggs on embryo mortality, hatchability, chick, yolk sac and internal organs weight. Eggs (n= 426) were randomly distributed into: a) Control group (n= 215), which were incubated at 37.5 °C for 21 days or b) Experimental group (n= 211), which were incubated at 39.5 °C, for 18 days and then at 37.5 °C for the remaining 3 days. In both groups eggs were incubated with a relative humidity of 55 %. The embryo mortality rate was greater (P 0.05) for the experimental than the control group (44.1 vs. 14.9 % respectively). On the contrary, hatching rate was greater (P 0.05) for the control than the experimental group (97.8 vs. 80.5 % respectively). The average weight of chicks, at 36 h of age, was lower (P 0.05) for the experimental than control group (36.3 vs. 37.01 g respectively). Also, increasing incubation temperature reduced (P 0.05) internal organs weight of chicks in the Experimental compared to Control group. On the other hand, yolk sac weight was reduced (P <0.05; 2.5 vs. 6.2 g for Control and Experimental group respectively). We conclude that increasing the incubation temperature of Araucana hen eggs up to 39.5 °C for 18 days has a negative effect on embryo survival, hatchability, chick and internal organs weight and absorption of yolk.

ABSTRACT

In birds, embryonic development begins before laying. The embryonic development variability at the time of egg laying is known and influences hatching rate, since very early or advanced stages are detrimental for embryos because they become more sensitive to stress storage. The heating of fertile eggs in the period between posture and storage has been studied as a way to reduce the negative effects of storage on hatchability since it allows embryos to progress to a stage where they are more able to survive during storage. This experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of artificial heating of fertile broiler breeder eggs in the period between the collection and storage on hatchability and chick weight at birth. For this, 5760 eggs from Cobb(r) broiler breeders, 57 weeks old, were used. The experimental design was completely randomized. It consisted of four defined treatments based on the heating time of eggs (zero, three, six and nine hours). Heating was done in a fumigation chamber at 30°C, and eggs were stored for three days. The artificial heating in the period between collection and storage didn't affect hatchability, embryo mortality and chick weight at birth, being, in this case, an unjustified practice...

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This work was conducted to determine the effect of non-ventilation (NV) during the first 10 days of incubation on carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and its effects on embryonic development (ED). Two studies were done on fertile hatching eggs from breeder hens (Ross 308) of 30 and 45 weeks of age. In the first study, two different incubation conditions were created, one incubator was non-ventilated (NV) during the first ten days of incubation, allowing the CO2 to rise and a second incubator was kept under standard conditions, with adequate ventilation (V). After the first 10 days, both incubations were kept under standard conditions. NV group at 10 days of incubation showed 11 600 ppm of [CO2], with 48% of hatchability from fertile eggs, higher (P < 0.05) than 2 100 ppm of [CO2], and 41% of hatchability from fertile eggs of V group. Day-old chicks from NV were longer and heavier tan chicks from V group. For the second study, two different incubation conditions were created, one incubator was moderately non-ventilated (MNV), and the second one was strictly non-ventilated (SNV). At transfer time, a hole of 1.3 mm in diameter was done over eggshell air cell, every incubator had two groups: with hole (H) and without hole (NH). MNV group at ten days of incubation showed 15 000 ppm of [CO2], and SNV group showed 17 000 ppm of [CO2], with 82% and 77% of hatchability, respectively. The induced hypercapnia during the early development stage improved hatchability parameters, weight and length of chicks. In 45 week-old breeder hens, an optimal hatching profile at high height above sea level with a limit of 15 000 ppm of [CO2] was determined. The eggshell hole helps to reduce embryonic mortality at 19.8 days; however, under this type of NV incubation, it is very important to take into account egg-mass loss, height above sea level and eggshell conductance constant, since all these factors contribute to generate the optimal partial pressure of [O2] and [CO2] before and during hatching.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

In both experiments there were five treatments using the following disinfection solutions for each method: synthetic phenol (1040ppm), chlorexidine digluconate (200ppm), quaternary ammonium (800ppm), quaternary ammonium (400ppm) + urea (600ppm), quaternary ammonium (130ppm) + glutaraldehyde (370ppm). In both experiments there were a control treatment without disinfection and another using disinfection using fumigation with formaldehyde (7.7gm-3). After the disinfection procedures, forty eggs per treatment were evaluated for presence of total mesophiles, mould and yeast, total coliforms, Pseudomonas sp and Aspergillus sp. Embryo diagnosis was driven in no hatched eggs, for determination of embryo mortality period, interior contamination, and it was determined the birth of inappropriate chicks for rear and hatchability. In the experiment in that eggs were disinfected by pulverization, the association between ammonia and glutaraldehyde presented higher contamination for total mesophiles in relation to other treatments, with exception of synthetic phenol treatment, which presented similar contamination to all. Differences were not detected among treatments for mold and yeast, total coliforms, Pseudomonas sp and Aspergillus sp, and for embryo diagnosis results. In experiment in that eggs were disinfected through immersion, higher contamination was verified to total mesophiles in eggs no disinfected in relation to disinfected with the different active components. Eggs without disinfection also presented larger contamination for total coliforms in relation to ammonia and urea treatment, being similar to all other treatments. The analysis of...

ABSTRACT

Two experiments were carried out to study the effects of broiler breeder age on weight uniformity of 1,080 eggs and yolks, and the effects of 9,216 eggs classified prior to setting on hatchability, embryonic mortality, and the relationship between chick and yolk sac weights. In the first study, the three treatments were eggs from broiler breeders on 31st (M31), 38th (M38), and 43th (M43)-week of age. In the second study, eggs produced by three broiler breeders flocks (31st, 38th, and 43th wk of age) were divided in six treatments; A: eggs weighting from 66 to 72g, 33,3 percent of them produced by broiler breeders of different ages; B: eggs weighting from 58 to 65g, 33,3 percent of them produced by broiler breeders of different ages; C: eggs weighting from 52 to 57g, 33,3 percent of them produced by broiler breeders of different ages; D: eggs from 31-wk-old broiler breeders, weighting from 52 to 72g; E: eggs from 38-wk-old broiler breeders, weighting from 52 to 72g; F: eggs from 43-wk- old broiler breeders weighting from 52 to 72g. Eggs produced by M31 had egg and yolk weights more uniform than the eggs collected from M43. Treatment A had the worst hatchability, higher embryonic mortality after 15 days of incubation, and produced heavier hatched chicks with superior absolute and relative weights of yolk sac.

ABSTRACT

The hatchability of sheep gastrointestinal nematode eggs exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and the activity of the hatched larvae were examined. Hatchability decreased with increasing exposure to radiation. The difference in hatchabilityof eggs irradiated for 15,30 and 60 minutes were highly significant (p < 0.01 dalpha = 3.07, 3.24 and 3.75) compared with the hatchability of the nonirradiated eggs. The life span of irradiated larvae was shortened, only 20% of those expose to UV radiation 60 minutes survive for 2 days as against 100% survival rate in the non-irradiated larvae. Batches of nematode larvae (L1) were irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) light for varying time interval to determine the influence of radiation on the transmission potential of the irradiated larvae. There was a decrease in the survival rate of the hatched free-swimming larvae that corresponded with the increasing radiation exposure time.
